Estate Mediaton + Coaching

Helping families settle estate disputes before they become messy, so they can stay friends after death.

Families are complicated and anticipating the death of a loved one can bring up a raft of big feelings; fear, resentment, regret, sadness, and yes sometimes even relief.  Not everything to do with death and estate planning is placed neatly in a lawyer box.

Many people make the choice not to write a will (or create the most basic will possible) in the hopes they can avoid having to face their family and the emotions their decisions might stir up.  Others create wills that never see the light of day or leave behind estates where there is nothing for their family to inherit.

We've seen the results of poorly planned estates hundreds of times over.  It's not pretty.

Why coaching is different

Coaching allows you to work through the legal AND emotional fall out of inheriting or dealing with the estate of a loved one.  It enables you to look holistically at the intentions of both the willmaker and other beneficiaries alongside the legalities of making a will or making a potential claim against an estate.

Once your person has died there's no going back to change their mind.  Estate mediation and coaching allow you a safe, non-judgemental space to work through all those big feelings and put strategies in place that will help your family stay friends (or at very least not enemies) after death.

Your Estate Lawyer
We Don't Do Estate Disputes

For more than a decade we've been helping families deal with death using a unique combination of compassion, conversation and coaching.  We don't want to be representing you in a dispute that costs you and your family both financially and emotionally.

Instead, we work with you to;

  • Interpret the will and any other legal documents you have access to and translate them into plain English
  • Help you understand the legalities of the estate as it stands and the impacts that will have on your family
  • Work with you to navigate any emotional or legal roadblocks that are creating conflict or confusion
  • Establish the intent of the will-maker and ascertain who the beneficiaries of the estate are or should be
  • Facilitate communications between family members
  • Suggest changes or ways you can facilitate an existing will that will ensure the best possible outcome for everyone
  • Provide legal advice and guidance
  • Provide estate planning tools and resources
  • Lead a family death meeting (it's more fun than it sounds)

Or a will that fails to deliver the intent of the willmaker.  This should be the step you take BEFORE shopping around for a lawyer to represent you in court.

YourEstateCoaching includes 2 x 2-hour sessions in person or online.  We work through all the heavy lifting you'll need to understand before you make any further decisions;  death law, legal beneficiaries, options to claim, probate application, supreme court processes, withdrawal of caveat, affidavits, legal fees, case law.... We suggest your 2nd session is used to facilitate a family meeting to discuss your options or strategy.
